SCIENCE AND LOGIC BEHIND NOT GOING TO TEMPLES AND KITCHEN DURING MENSTRUATION

“Oh god periods again!“ Many girls say this when they get the same thing every month that there are periods, and restrictions regarding not going to temple and kitchen are free. It's similar to buy 1 get 2 free. On a serious note, Menstruation, or periods, is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman's monthly cycle. In many of the households especially in India, females are prohibited to enter the temple and also the kitchen during these times. These beliefs aren`t superstitions, they hold deep scientific and logical reasoning behind, many theories suggest the same.

One theory is according to the Vedic science which is believed to be the most convincing out of all other theories. To understand this theory we first need to understand 2 terms. In Vedic science, the word ”Aapna” refers to the downward flow of energy. Another concept is called “Kundalini Shakti”, it is a form of divine feminine energy believed to be located at the base of the spine. Kundalini Shakti is said to uncoil herself to move upward through the chakras. So when activated it is the upward flow of energy.

Now coming to ancient Hindu temples. They aren't just constructed anywhere, they use to figure out a specific location where the positive energy is in abundance from the usage of magnetic and electric wave distribution of the North and the South trust. Then they used to find out a particular place where the magnetic and electric wave distribution was highest. The idol on the copper plate was placed.  The plate was placed to radiate the magnetic energy and electric wave distribution. This helps to generate an upward flow of energy, relaxing the mind of the people coming into the temple.

So now when the woman is menstruating she is facing a downward flow of energy whereas when they go to the temple it instantly activates the upward flow of energy to activate the ¨Kundalini energy due to the architecture of the ancient temples. There is an instant change in the flow of energy. Many of the women have been to the temple while menstruating and they haven't felt the same. Vedic science says that these women haven't felt anything loud because we often miss out on subtle changes.

instant change can lead to various diseases and disorders for example ¨Endometriosis¨. The exact cause of the disease is not yet known but one of the theories suggests that in endometriosis the menstrual flow of blood which should go down instantly starts flowing upwards like inside the fallopian tube and into the pelvic area. These tissues start growing there which gives birth to extremely painful situations. So the instant flow of upward energy can cause such diseases if a menstruating woman enters the temple. Hence, it has been prohibited for women to enter the temple while they were menstruating.

Another theory suggests that in the earlier times the temples were in the forests, or people had to go through the forests to visit the temple. As we know that forests have wild animals and animals can attack when they smell the blood. Since the woman is menstruating and hence the blood is flowing, so there's a risk attached for the same.

The reason why the menstruating woman is not allowed in the kitchen is a simple theory. In olden times women used to do a lot of physical work like cooking things from scratch, farming, managing the households with hygiene concerns. Also when a woman is menstruating her body becomes a little weak due to the loss of blood.  Hence, To give women the monthly rest this was the practice followed and still propagating today.

To conclude, we are often asked to  ¨Don't ask why!¨ when it comes to traditions and beliefs but to respect our culture and improve our lifestyles we need to ask why, and preserve our culture and traditions.

  1. As an egalitarian, I'm extremely proud of the author to bring out and discuss this concept. There are obviously converse opinions on this, but it is necessary to stop pseudo-feminism and understand not all practices are unscientific and patronizing for the females.

  2. Informative, but the blog could be a bit shorter

  3. Quite informative but nevertheless over the years people started treating a menstruating woman as someone who is dirty and untouchable whereas our ancient books respected them. While we are appreciating our ancient cultures let us also not forget that they respected women equally.
