The Science Behind Indian Beliefs Regarding Sleeping Directions...

*Me sleeping*, *Mom wakes me up and says* ¨Why are you facing the North and sleeping, sleep facing the East just right now!!!¨ Me: ¨What is this, IDK where`s east, west and all, so mom let me sleep naa¨ I bet most of your parents have said this. But how does sleeping in certain directions even matter, aren't they just superstitions?? Is it true that if we sleep with our head facing towards the north we will invite evil spirits and ghosts? It is a myth, but there is science behind not sleeping with our head towards the north, let me explain.

There are many reasons for the same such as. We all know that Earth has a large magnetic field with north and south poles and it has a strong magnetic pull towards the core. As we are in India, we live in the Northern Hemisphere. If we keep our head towards the north and stay in the same position for 7-9 hours, then due to the magnetic pull the blood will flow more towards the brain leading to disturbed sleep.  This is the reason why we sometimes wake-up groggy after a long sleep. This is the reason why any direction except North

is okay but East is considered as best.

This theory lies in the scientific concept of magnetism. Let's understand the context of other directions too.  It is well known that the Earth has its magnetic field and our body also has a magnetic field of its own. When we sleep with our head towards the south the unlike poles of the Earth and Body attract each other. We wake up in the morning with a sense of ¨have slept well¨. When we sleep with our heads towards the North the iron(present in the blood) in our body tends to coagulate (gather) in the brain creating disturbances, headaches, etc. This can cause a lot of disorders like Parkinson's, cognitive disorders, and several other neurological problems.

When we sleep with our heads facing towards the East, the energy of the sun enters our body through the head and leaves through the feet. (As the sun rises in the East) This leaves us with a warm head and cold feet. When we sleep with our head towards the west the reverse happens, it leaves us with a cold head and warm feet. This is an unpleasant sensation.

To conclude, our ancestors simplified this entire theory into one simple myth. This is because they cannot explain the entire theory of this to everyone. Often it is told that ¨Don't ask why!¨ when it comes to traditions and beliefs but to respect our culture and improve our lifestyles we need to ask why! We need to preserve our culture and traditions.
