THE SCIENCE BEHIND WEARING THE TRADITIONAL INDIAN JEWELLERY...

When we think of a traditional Indian woman, we might see her wearing a saree (traditional Indian dress), wearing a lot of jewelry including earrings, bangles, and necklaces made of gold or silver. Why don`t wear gold below their waist? Why is it important to pierce our ears and our nose? Just for looking beautiful or are there some scientific health benefits hidden behind them?

The science behind wearing traditional gold or silver bangles that these metals helped to absorb energy, which was then transmitted to the body improving physiological functioning and increasing vitality. Also, constant friction with the wrist increases the blood circulation level. Furthermore, the energy passing out through outer skin is again reverted to one's own body. Hence, they served a scientific purpose as well.

There is also science attached to piercing our ears and wearing earrings. Indian women traditionally wore earrings. Ayurveda stated that by piercing the ears and wearing earrings several diseases like hernia could be controlled. It also helped to regulate the menstrual cycle and restrict hysteria. The electric current within the body was also regulated by wearing earrings. Indian physicians believed that by piercing the ears and wearing earrings the part of the intellect, the thinking fatalities, and the power of decision making would increase. Problems associated with the ear channels could also be curtailed by wearing earrings. These benefits would only take place if the ear is pierced at the correct point.

The tradition of wearing a toe ring is very old. Married Indian women wear silver toe rings on their second toes. A nerve from the second toe is connected to the heart through the uterus. Wearing a toe ring strengthens the uterus; this also regulates blood flow and manages the menstrual cycle effectively in women’s bodies. Silver is a good conductor, which absorbs polar energies from the earth and passes it to the body.

Once my grandma asked me to get my nose pierced. I was like nooo! It is so old fashioned, but there is a science behind it too. The point of piercing in the nostril strengthens ovaries thereby bringing about positive changes in the sexuality of a woman and favorable conditions for childbirth in her body. This is the reason why most customs insist on piercing nostrils and wearing nose pins after marriage.

To continue the point regarding gold jewelry. Gold jewelry worn by Indian women is not just a status symbol but gold jewelry helps in regulating body temperature, this enhances immunity. Also, gold threads were sewn to the borders of sarees. Silver was used because it cools the inflammation. Copper is a great antiseptic. Copper alloy threads were used in war clothing. There was science in dressing too.

You might have heard the common belief ¨Women should not wear gold below her waist because it is an insult to Goddess Laxmi (the goddess of wealth and gold is a symbol of wealth), but the science behind this practice is that the gold ornaments keep the body hot and silver ornament keeps the body cold. Thus, wearing gold above the waist and silver below the waist helps to balance our body temperature. Silver responds well with the Earth's energy, while gold provides warm vibrations to the skin helping our body to regenerate cells.

To conclude, Indian jewelry was designed and worn in such a way that it enhances a woman`s health. Often when it comes to traditions we are told ¨Don't ask why!¨ but to preserve and follow our culture it is essential to ask why?
